Municipality of Tsarevo

About the Partner

Municipality of Tsarevo is located in southeastern Bulgaria, approximately 65 km south of Burgas and close to the Turkish border. It occupies the Bulgarian part of the Strandzha Mountain region and covers an area of 530.1 km². The municipality consists of 13 settlements, including the towns of Tsarevo and Ahtopol, with a total population of approximately 8,800 inhabitants.

The municipality is distinguished by its unique natural environment, where the Black Sea coastline meets the Strandzha Mountains. It features 23 beaches extending over 9 km, centuries-old oak forests, picturesque bays, and the Veleka River, the largest river in the Strandzha region. This exceptional combination of coastal and mountainous landscapes supports rich biodiversity and provides an attractive setting for nature-based and sustainable tourism.

Tsarevo also has a valuable cultural and historical heritage. The town, historically known as Vasiliko, dates back to at least the 12th century and preserves the authentic traditions, customs, and identity of the Strandzha region. These cultural assets, together with its natural resources, make the municipality one of the most attractive destinations on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Tourism is the municipality's main economic sector, although it remains highly seasonal, lasting approximately four to six months each year. Around half of all registered businesses operate in the tourism, hospitality, and restaurant sectors, predominantly as micro and small enterprises. Other important economic activities include forestry, maritime industries, food processing, agriculture, and services, which contribute to local employment and help diversify the economy beyond the tourism season.
